It also doesn't help that Callaway and Taylormade have such a stranglehold over the game improvement sector of the golf equipment market.
Agree, I don't think it was ever an issue of quality, but (especially in golf) perception counts for so much. I mean, how many golfers have really played enough rounds with different sets of clubs to really be able to tell the difference? How many are good enough that it would even matter? Me shanking a 4-iron with a Taylormade is no different than me shanking a 4 with a Titleist. Not sure I'm going to be able to tell the difference in perimeter weighting on that badly thinned 6 iron I just hit.

For me the issue was always price. I was curious about Nike equipment since they apparently hired some of 'top' clubmakers from other companies (whatever that means), but their stuff was always so premium-priced it basically discouraged me (and many others, apparently) from ever giving them a shot. I feel like they went about it in the wrong way, to some extent, by not doing more to get their clubs into the hands of golfers out on the course, and instead it seemed like they thought the swoosh logo meant golfers would automatically pay up to get their stuff.

Although in the end it probably didn't much matter - the golf equipment biz has been in a slowdown for some time and there's probably no end in sight. Which is okay by me to be honest; I'd like to return to saner days where you could get a good quality name-brand set of irons for some sub-4-figure amount. And for f's sake, can we get someone to tell the club manufacturers to stop putting plastic inserts into the back of their irons? Has that trend passed yet (please)?

Never really loved it though. The reaction I got from, basically everyone that I was carrying a Nike driver was always... "Why? I've always heard their stuff wasn't great" or "Why? That's strange, I've never seen anyone with Nike stuff or never heard anything good about Nike stuff"

That being said, this year I switched to a Taylormade driver, and those comments have stopped. Now it's "Wow, that's a sweet club eh?" lol Like... Yeah.. I guess? Perception is reality for many. So yeah, like someone else said, they always seemed to be fighting an uphill battle with their image. For me, it was a performance issue as to why I switched from the Nike driver, but I thought it was an interesting point nonetheless.

The news of Adidas trying to sell off Taylormade bothers me a bit. I LOVE their stuff.
Yep, again, Nike erred in my opinion by not doing enough to get their clubs into golfers' bags out on the course, so that they'd be commonplace and not an oddity. I've had similar experiences to yours w/ regard to Nike - pull out a VRS and people are like "pfft...poser", but pull out that white R11 and everyone's like "oooh!". It's total BS. But Nike never did enough to shake that. If they could do it over again, other than not getting into the business to begin with, I wonder if they would have considered either lowering the initial prices or running more promotions to get the clubs out there and into bags.

What I'm hoping doesn't happen is Taylormade being sold to some Chinese conglomerate and then becoming basically bargain-bin throw-away quality clubs with a Taylormade logo. Although I'm sorta thinking that's what's going to happen....

Honestly, the Nike clubs felt cheap and inferior up until about 2 or 3 years ago. The best would be when you would hear the Sasquatch driver's unique thud sound in the distance followed by the sound of ball meeting tree or a chorus of profanities.

And see, I felt the opposite about it. Like I said earlier, I had that old Sasquatch square headed, strange sounding driver. I did nothing but hit it long, and split fairways with it. Around the time I bought that driver, it was already one, maybe 2 model years old. I bought it because it was cheap, and in all honesty, I bought it because it was Nike. I didn't know a lot about golf, or golf manufacturers at the time, but I knew Nike, and assumed it had to be good then. However, I quickly learned that was the opposite perception of most in the golf world.

Interestingly enough, when I bought the Covert 2, the bright red color almost turned me off of it, but I hit it better than that Ping, and Taylormade that I tried at the time. I still took a lot of crap from people for having it in my bag because it was Nike though. I even let my friends hit shots with that driver, they all hit it well and said it wasn't bad, but still, it was the red headed step child (no pun intended). I hit it longer than the old square one, but I was more inconsistent with it. After upgrading to TM irons, and never hitting irons so well in my life, that's what prompted me to try a TM driver again, and the switch happened after that. Something has changed for me some where along the line where I just couldn't figure out my game with the Covert. I almost bought the Vapor (? The black/yellow one?) but ultimately, my performance with the TM irons, and eventually the R15, and the change was inevitable for me.

So long story short, it's funny... I bought it... on the premise that Nike was probably banking on when so many new players joined the game. I had been golfing for 2-3 years already prior to that, with used hand me down stuff, but never paid attention to the manufacturers, but I went in the store, knew Nike, and that was it. For me, early on the quality and performance were there.

I think the biggest thing that went against them was they tried too many different things, like the square headed driver at a time where the main player base of golf, and the writers etc, just weren't ready and prepared for that kind of evolution in the equipment. It went against the norm, and the traditions, and quite frankly their equipment still does today. The big cavity in the driver head, the funky neon colors, the names. The industry has changed now and it's more accepting, but at the time when you look back at it, it may have been too much, too quickly, and that may have damaged the perception/reputation right from the start.

My best round of the weekend was a 77 on the Wolverine. Had some people question my handicap, but give me wide fairways and a 6000 yard course, what do they think is going to happen. They were lucky it was a 77 because I had back to back 3 putts and burned the cup on a couple birdies.

The Bear tore me up a little it was windy and I hit some shots short going for some tough pins and ended up in some really deep bunkers, but I still had 11 pars on that round. Should have had a few birdies, had alot of putts 15 feet and in that didn't fall as in went half way down and did a magic trick and popped out. I picked up on a few holes that my partner was doing well on so I don't know what my score was for sure, but it was in the mid 80's somewhere.

I also shot an 80 and 82 on the Spruce Run. That course is a little bit tighter.

Had 2 chip ins over the weekend. Also playing against 2 different teams and one dunked one from 180 for and eagle after taking an iron off the tee and another 150 yard eagle. Amazing to see that stuff happen.

Finally I feel like my swing is back, I was really struggling early in the year with blading approach shots, but I didn't do that a single time in 72+ holes over that tournament.
We stayed at that resort a couple times when I was young (and my dad wouldn't take me on the "nice courses" yet ). Isn't that high-rise hotel the most random tall building you've ever seen? It's like farm, farm, farm....20-story hotel?

If you've ever been on GolfWRX.com and been into the Nike threads you'd see how much the clubmakers over at Nike Golf's Oven facility cared about their clubs. A lot of members on that forum had club fitting sessions with the head clubmakers there and they were some of the most passionate people in the industry. They made customer one off putters for a few members there, constantly engaged in discussions on the forums and always answered users questions.

The Nike threads on that forum were the most popular threads, the Nike 2016 thread had 11,222 replies and 980,771 views. No other thread in the equipment section of that forum comes even close. Heck, even the simple "post pictures of your Nike products" had 3,775 replies and 312,956 views.

Nike was immensely popular with the better golfer because Nike treated the better golfers exactly like they treated their pro staffers. Customer service was top notch and they built your clubs EXACTLY the way you wanted them. If the club wasn't right or it broke during play, Nike would send you a new one no questions asked.

It's a real shame and I have a feeling a lot of the Nike club guys will go to PXG.

Golf is an interesting game. I felt incredible swinging the sticks today. I was making great contact and the people I was playing with said many times, that my swing looked effortless. That says a lot considering my disability and the lack of strength in my legs. That being said, I scored horribly. My putting was good today, however my 87 was not a reflection of how I feel that I played. I hit through the fairways a few times, and was hitting out of deep, thick rough and it cost me a few strokes.
I am the lesson after the fall.

I got a Mizuno JPX S2 wedge from Budget Golf via Amazon for 59.99 2 weeks ago. Free shipping, no tax, and the club is great.

To be honest, I was eyeing up this one last night, and it's 50% off right now. Hopefully when I go pick up my hybrid that I was having extended and re-gripped they'll still have a 60 left.

I've heard good things about the Nike engage wedges. If you're not looking to spend big bucks, those would be the wedges I'd look at. Just make sure you get the right sole for the types of courses/ shots you usually play.

                              Couple of rumors swirling

UA is in talks to buy Titleist and that some of Nike's top club engineers have moved to UA. Since Speith is UA's major endorser and plays Titleist, that's a big reason they want to buy them. They were in talks with Cobra late last year/early this year but those broke down.

Second rumor is that Adidas is making an announcement on Wed about the sale of Taylormade/Adams. They've been up for sale for a few months now.

As was said earlier in the thread, the vendors have created their own mess by over saturating the market with new equipment every year and that has also really killed the trade in/secondary market for used clubs. Hopefully they all decide to go back to at least an every other year model.

I've heard about this rumour for awhile now. I just cannot see it happening. I mean, UA is making a killing off their clothes alone, why bring in Titleist and possibly suffer the same fate as Nike?

I'm not saying it won't happen, but from a business standpoint it doesn't make sense. Jordan Spieth isn't Tiger Woods. He will never drive people to pickup the game like Tiger did. It just seems like a poor business decision.
