Memphis Offseason Preview - Part 3

FA Options

T.J Warren
Spoiler

This is our favorite fit of the bunch a combo F that can come in and be instant offense. He can shoot from 3 and has a driving layup and close shoot. He isn't a good defender, but would be surrounded by others that can hide him. He has averaged 14 a game the last 2 years. The bad news we are hearing he wants 26 million per year. I would think Memphis offers 3 year and 60 million with him being 29. He could take the Winslow role of playing the 4 when Memphis goes small. He will have to pick starter on bad team or 6th man on good team.

Aaron Gordon
Spoiler

He won't be starting in Orlando and has been productive the last few years. Someone is going to throw a offer of 20+ a year at him likely one of the small market teams. He is 27 so he is going to want a long-term big payday. He would be a great luxury as a athletic 4 to score off the P&R. Orlando doesn't have a lot of cap space going forward so letting him walk for free won't be high on their list of things to do.

Mo Bamba
Spoiler

He is a RFA so we will see what the Orlando roster looks like by the time FA starts. They could draft a C in the 1st round or trade Vuecevic. The biggest thing with him is he needs to get on the court and play. He is the type of player that will pick playing time over $. Memphis won't have big minutes to offer so it doesn't make sense to throw 15 million a year at him with him blocked by others. Orlando isn't likely to just give him away unless its a overpay. If your Memphis with a long-term question at C with Jonas getting older and cap space you have to make the call.

Others
Marcus Smart - tempting but unless a move is made Memphis doesn't need him
Robert Covington - 31 and Portland will want him back. He hasn't shoot great the last few years despite a high grade in that area. His defense will be declining soon.

NBA Finals

Lakers vs Nets

Game 1 - Nets Win
Harden gets a triple double and Durant scores 38

Game 2- Nets Win
Nets go up 2-0 with Anthony Davis still out. Durant and Irving score 30 and Joe Harris gets 18

Game 3 - Lakers Win
Anthony Davis returns and despite him and Lebron combining to shoot only 9 of 30 LA gets the win.

Game 4 - Lakers Win
Its now tied up after a 14 point win as Davis gets 27-11-7. Lebron just misses a triple double with 20-9-13.

Game 5 - Nets Win
A 7 point win lead by Irving's 34 points, 8 assist and 4 steals

Game 6 - Nets Win
The Nets win the championship as Harden gets a 41 point triple double. Irving and Durant combined for 51

Brooklyn wins the title as the gamble to trade for Harden a few years back pays off. They now face a offseason where the 3 big stars will all be FA and unlikely they will get all 3 plus Shamet and Dinwiddy back.

Player Retirement

Dwight Howard - Hall Of Fame
J.J Redick
Rajon Rando
Paul Milsap
Thaddeus Young
Goran Dragic
Wes Matthews
P.J Tucker
Aaron Baynes

* Chris Paul will come back for 1 more year as it didn't seem right for him to end his career missing most of the season. Al Horford will also come back for 1 more year.

Re: NBA 2K - Georgiafan's 3 year realistic rebuilds / remasters

Draft Backcourt Preview

This is our first time talking about the draft this year after a ton of coverage this year we have fallen behind. We do plan to go more in depth next year when the class is projected to be better then this one. We will go over some names on the front court we think are the most interesting. Most of the fun names in the draft will be in the frontcourt. Overall this is a down year for the draft.

SG Mitch Richmond - 76 overall
Spoiler

He is considered the best wing in the draft class and the favorite to go 2nd overall. A 3 level scorer that can slash and score at the rim. Like most rookies his defense needs some work. He wont ever be the #1 option on a title team, but he can score 20 a night and be a #2 or 3 option

PG Rod Strickland - 73 overall
Spoiler

The best PG in the draft another likely top 5 draft pick. He is raw, but arguable has the most potential in the draft class. A true PG with playmaking skills that can also really score inside. Once he improves his 3 pointer should be a 20 and 10 guy.

SG Hershey Hawkins - 75 overall
Spoiler

He isn't athletic. but brings a lot of things to the table so he should go in the top 5 range. He can score on all 3 levels as well as defend. He should become a quality starter in time and be a combo G off the bench his rookie year.

SG Dan Marjerle - 72 overall
Spoiler

Thunder Dan is one of the better 3 & D prospects in the draft and should be a perfect fit in the modern NBA. He is listed as a SG we expect him to make the move to the 3. He might even be able to play some small ball 4 at 6'6 220. He is also a solid athlete. He should easily go in the top 10.

SG Steve Kerr - 70 overall
Spoiler

The definition of a 3 point specialist who in short doesn't do much of anything else. It will be interesting to see where he is drafted as he isn't viewed as having a lot of upside. He would instantly be able to join someone rotation as a shooter off the bench. I would guess in the 20's

SG Rex Chapman - 75 overall
We forgot his picture even though he will go in the top 10. He is 6'4 and 195 so should be able to play either G spot. He is more well rounded then you would expect with C- defense and B+ in 3 point shooting, Mid range and close.

SG Vernon Maxwell - 71 overall
The 23 year old is a 2 at 6'4 and 191 pounds. He is a offense player grading out in the B range in all 3 levels of scoring. His defense is C- so eventually should be ok in that area. We expect him to go mid to late 1st round and be a career bench rotation piece.

PG Brian Shaw - 69 overall
A bad athlete and defender will likely go in the 2nd round. His best trait is his playmaking so he will be 3rd/4th PG to start his career. He has potential.

SG Vinny Del Ninro - 69 overall
A 3 & D player that should find a way to go late 1st round. He is raw and has potential. Since he is 6'4 can play either G spot.

Re: NBA 2K - Georgiafan's 3 year realistic rebuilds / remasters

Draft Frontcourt Preview

This draft class is weak at the PF/C spot especially compared to last years. They are still a few guys that profile at quality starters. If you want one then you better grab them early as the positions lack depth.

PF Danny Manning - 80 overall
Spoiler

The best player in this class and a lock to go 1st overall. He is a pretty well rounded prospect with no major weakness. He can score inside, midrange and posting up. He is also athletic. If a team that has the 1st pick already has a star player he would be a excellent 2nd or 3rd player.

C Rik Smits - 76 overall
Spoiler

A very intriguing player at 7'4 and 265 pounds. He has a post up game so with his size will create big mismatches vs smaller C's. He will also get a lot of dunks. He has a excellent mid range shot at the combine his standing 15 ft hit as many as anyone in the class He is a lock to average double digit rebounds a game. He will go in the top 10.

C Rony Seikaly - 76 overall
Spoiler

This will be the battle to see if he goes over Smits as the first C off the board. His post defense and rebounding is probably the best in the class. He can really score inside grading out at A-. He doesn't have the size that Smits does, but still can score by posting up. I would guess he gets the nod over Smits maybe in the top 5.

PF / C Charles Smith - 76 overall
Spoiler

He is kinda similar to A.C Green who was in last years class and dropped to the late 20's. When you look at his grades they don't impress you. He has really high intangibles which is what gives him the high overall. He does have some stuff to offer with grades in the B's in mid range and inside scoring. He also can block shots better then the other 2 and has a 87 standing dunk. I would project late lottery for him to a team looking for a big off the bench.

PF Tom Tolbert - 70 overall
Spoiler

A early 2nd round type player thats raw with some upside. He is now a stretch 4 that can't shoot so wont be helping you for about 2 years.

C Will Purdue - 69 overall
Spoiler

Another 2nd round player that profiles has more of a #3 big

Draft - 10 Names To Know

This will be the final part of our draft preview from the prospect side. Here are 10 names that will go in the 1st round that you don't know.

PG Leroy Barkley - 76 overall
He is the best offensive player in this class and I would say even better then anyone in last years class. I don't see anyway he doesn't score 20 a night and could even hit 30 some years. Similar to a Trae Young your going to have to build your team around him because he is only 6'0 and 188 and is a dreadful on defense. He lead the combine in lane sprints. Which means he is a athlete already grading out at B+.

SG/ SF Randolph Dennis - 72 overall
A lottery level player that is raw with upside. He has great size at 6'6 224 and is the best athlete in the class at A- grade. He is a elite dunker and A+ scoring inside. Your banking on him improving his defense and shooting as far now he just a athletic dunker

SG Mack Samuels - 72 overall
He is one of the best shooters in the class a knockdown sniper. He is also a athlete and has potential with only being 19 years old.

PG Dexter Oakley - 73 overall
A 6'1 scoring PG shines at scoring inside and is already a + shooter. His defense and playmaking needs some work.

SF Jon Nixon - 75 overall
B+ athlete with similar shooting skills and with a bad SF class could be coveted.

SF Jon Harrington - 74 overall
A 6'6 athletic wing that can also shoot and has a long ways to go on defense.

SG Toni Bosnaj - 76 overall
6'4 225 pound young SG with no major weakness. His best trait is his mid range jumper. Despite his overall he isn't ready to play big minutes his rookie year.

SG Bryce Robertson - 73 overall
Another guy that is awful on defense. He is a 3 level scorer with potential.

SG Alonzo Jamison - 74 overall
A combo G that can shoot and doesn't play defense

PF Darrell Jameson - 71 overall
6'9 athlete with a decent shoot. His lack of defense and being unable to play the 3 likely means a bench player.

Re: NBA 2K - Georgiafan's 3 year realistic rebuilds / remasters

Draft Lottery Results

Winners

Hornets
The big winners they jump all the way up from 6 to 1. They will get the chance to draft PF Danny Manning where they do have a hole. The could also look to trade the pick as he might not team well with starting C Hot Rod Williams.

Magic
One of the hot young teams in the league thanks to their young defense players. A game changer as they go from 8 to 4. They now have the most fasciation offseason as they also have two people they can trade in Vucevic and Aaron Gordon (sign and trade). They could look at C which would make Vucevic expendable or the skilled offense player Barkley

Thunder
Their picks basically went as planned and they will pick 3 and 8. Absolute everything has went their way the last 2 years barely getting to keep the Rockets pick last year that landed 5 instead of 4. Then the clippers were bad this year after Kawhi got hurt. They have a big hole at C so they could look to make a move for KAT. After drafting two top 5 players last year and trading for Lonzo Ball they don't need two more rookies.

Losers

Bulls
They didn't get to keep the 76ers pick as they surprisingly missed the playoffs. With as talented of a team as they are it wouldn't surprise us if that ended up being in the mid 20's. They will pick 5th after having the worst record in the league. They might as well take on bad salaries for draft picks as they will be picking in the lottery again next year.

Rockets
They are still in good shape overall with picks 6,18 and 26. They did drop from 4 to 6 and for a team needing elite young players won't get a superstar at 6. They likely will trade Oladipo before the draft is over. Would they make a move to #1 ?

76ers
They aren't big losers here as they did hang on to their 1st round pick from trading Tobas Harris. They would much rather give up their pick next year. They did drop going from 5 to 7 so they could have ended up a huge winner. Another team that probably makes a big move this offseason maybe for Bradley Beal ?

Re: NBA 2K - Georgiafan's 3 year realistic rebuilds / remasters

Question for the audience as I look for some feedback. What type of coverage would you like to see for the 29 other teams ?

Since I am headed into year 3 things have changed enough to where I think its time to go over the other teams in some level. However I don't want to overdo the coverage at the same time tis hard to do a preview of a team in like 2 sentences

a. Write a 2-4 sentences per team and include a pic from the roster screen

b. Go more in depth of the 10 most interesting teams

c. Just skip in and focus on my team and do team previews before I play full games of other teams.

I finished the draft last night so things have lined up good for me to finish FA and all the summer league type stuff this weekend.

Re: NBA 2K - Georgiafan's 3 year realistic rebuilds / remasters

Memphis Drafts 3 Point Specialist

Memphis traded one of their 1st round picks in the Thybulle traded. They still had the Utah pick which ended up a lot worse then expected at 25. Last year it was going to be a lottery pick until Utah had a historic run to make the playoffs so got to wait a year to convey the pick. With such a deep roster whoever was the pick is going to get very little playing time.

Memphis just stood pat at 25 and toke the 3 point specialist Steve Kerr. With a team build around shooters its easy to see the fit with Steve. He is listed as a PG, but he is expected to make the move to SG (+2 overall). For his rookie year he will give you a player to sub in late in games when your down and need to score fast. He could also be in the game in your FT lineup. He will likely never develop into a starter with his weakness at defense and playmaking. We do expect him to have a long career as a bench guy with his high IQ and shooting ability.

This is a pick more for the future then this year so Steve will be able to spend some time in the G and be brought along slowly. This basically confirms that Grayson Allen will not be resigned. So that saves the team $ as Grayson is expected to get a deal around 3 year and 24 million. It also gives you some insurance with Konchar who is in the final year of his deal.

Memphis also had the last pick in the draft and took a draft and stash guy that likely will never come over to the league. He will be used as a small trade piece down the line.

Press Conference

What other players were you looking at with the 25th pick ?
We had our eye on Vernon Maxwell but he went to Denver at 19. Vinny Del Ninro was another guy we liked but he went like one pick ahead of us. Going into this process we wanted to take a young C to start developing behind Jonas. This class just didn't have any depth at the position so once the top guys went in the lottery it was bare bones. We looked at Will Purdue, but ended up deciding to just sign a vet for this year instead. They were some PG's highly ranked on the board, but we wasn't going to take a true PG.

With so many shooters and G's on this team is drafting another one overkill ?
It probably is however since whoever we drafted wasn't going to be in the opening night rotation for us we didn't have to reach for need. We were able to go with BPA. They were other guys on the board that may have had more upside. We decided to play it safe and go with the for sure bet. Steve's shooting will transfer over to the NBA from day 1. If a injury happens we can play him and not skip a beat in our quest to win a title this year.

This draft was considered weak do you think that's true ?
If you compare it to last year then yes this draft is a lot weaker. We got Stefan in the 20's last year and this year he would go in the lottery. Even some of the shooters like that kid we traded in that same deal that went early 2nd round. He would go in the 20's in this draft. I don't think you had the high end talent in this years draft like you had the last few years.
