    Re: 2013 Toronto Blue Jays

Morrow is the only one that matters. We already have 4 solid guys in Dickey, Buehrle, Rogers looks to be coming around and if he can keep going 6+ with no more of this 4 inning BS, and seemingly Wang. If Johnson flops a few more times, Morrow can replace him.

Rest might be nice later in the season, but for now, what we have seems to be working and hopefully it stays that way.

Regarding Jamie Evans....Really interesting stuff here

MLB.com has learned that Toronto officially hired Evans this week as a consultant to the organization. He is one of the originators of the weighted-ball program, which has been used by the likes of Steve Delabar, Brett Cecil, Casey Janssen and most recently Dustin McGowan.
Evans' weighted-ball program has seen a large increase in popularity over the past year, and the Blue Jays appear to be getting ahead of the curve by bringing Evans into the fold.

The workout routine involves the use of weighted balls to strengthen muscles around the shoulder. As part of the process, pitchers use various holds and also go through their throwing motion without releasing the ball.
Looks like the Blue Jays may be ahead of the curve with this hire.

I actually have some nerves going for this Rockies series. It's a good feeling though since it means there is something substantive on the line for this team still. They have to have two out of three.

June 4th Jays were 24-34 and 11.5 games back of 1st(9 back of 2nd WC spot)

June 17th Jays are 33-36 and 8 games back of 1st(5.5 back of 2nd WC spot)

Less than 2 weeks and look how much things change!

Hopefully Jays can continue to win like this for rest of season. We need to win 4 or so games per week for rest of season.

Since May 10th, Jays have gone 19-12. 2nd best record in the AL since then(next best AL East record since May 10 was 20-15 from Red Sox)

Those numbers are the very reason why I said we don't have to be .500 yet because it mattered more who we played, as long as we won more than we lost. .500 is a bonus. A lot of things have gone our way which is also why I said we can't just stop after the 10 AL East games; those 4 against Detroit could erase much of the gains that have been made.

I however do expect that by the end of the month, the AL East teams and Texas will be the only ones in the way; Cleveland will get passed and KC will cool off.

              Re: 2013 Toronto Blue Jays

A couple things and then a question:

              1. Looks like Jose Reyes may be back as early as next week! Hopefully the Jays don't just rush him out there.

              2. Gregg Zaun made an interesting point regarding Morrow, saying that the rotation is performing so well these days that they should put him in the bullpen which in turn would motivate him to stay healthy and pitch more consistently.

              Now my question:

Does anyone know why exactly it seems like Jack Morris is doing a lot of TV work during homestands? It's very weird though I think I know the end result of this as I think Pat Tabler's days may be numbered. It seems like the Rogers people are grooming Dirk Hayhurst to be a big part of the radio team with Mike Wilner and quite frankly when those two are paired up the radio broadcast REALLY picks up.

I like Jerry Howarth a lot but it seems to me like his game has slipped badly since Ashby left. When he's calling the game whether it's with Morris or Hayhurst as the analyst there just doesn't seem to be a good chemistry there. Morris is far too vague/general in his commentary and Hayhurst is a little TOO detailed and skews to a younger demographic. I do think Howarth has the lead PBP job for as long as he wants it but we might see a permanent setup next year of Howarth, Wilner and Hayhurst with Morris booted upstairs on the TV side with Buck Martinez.

                Re: 2013 Toronto Blue Jays

Either way, Jays have worst broadcasters of the 3 Toronto teams(Leafs easily have the best)

And I'd move Rogers of rotation. I know he's done good, but maybe that sets him up for a long reliever position in the bullpen or something?

Wang could also be gone too. He's had 1 great game and 1 bad game. So give him 1-2 more starts and see which of those 2 games was a fluke.

I wonder if Negrych will ever be given a shot in the roster this season. Hitting around .350 for the season in AAA

I'm sorry but until boring man Devlin is off the air the Jays are by default the 2nd best broadcasters in Toronto.

As for Negrych? September call up is my best guess

Wang against Baltimore could tell a lot. If Rogers has another solid 7 innings now, there is no reason to take him out. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Morrow isn't the guy that can go out and get double digit strike outs and keep us in the game yet, so why take someone out who is keeping us in the game? Make sure he is 100% first and see where the rotation is then.

                      Re: 2013 Toronto Blue Jays

In some ways a beneficial misfortune, Morrow is going to be out longer. Won't have to touch the rotation after all. Some guy named Tommy Manzella is on the roster for some reason. I'm sure he'll go on the wayside once Reyes is back up. Letting him sit out 60 games or so should help playing on the turf.

Believe that makes 25-0 now when leading after 7? Something like that.

Guess I should update where we could be in the next 2 weeks. I would like to think Buehrle could get the job done today, especially with our offense. And the pitching matchups look somewhat favorable this weekend... but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

1-0, vs. Colorado (worst case, we go for the sweep of Baltimore if a loss)
                      2-1, vs. Baltimore
2-1, @ Tampa (looks possible the way they're playing)
2-2, @ Boston (be real here)

And again, we can't just give it back dropping 3 of 4 to Detroit. That puts us 41-40, so you get your precious .500 record Majingir.

Let's say we are 5 out of the wildcard after today. Yankees get possibly 2 wins on the Dodgers. Hopefully Detroit can get a win, that will put us 5 back of Baltimore as well. A Tampa win over Boston would be nice, but either way is beneficial. I'd like to see a KC win today, that puts us just a 0.5 game back of them and tied with Cleveland. A Texas loss is nice, but Baltimore and NY are more important now.

If the weekend goes as planned, you make up yet another game on Baltimore. Boston has 4 in Detroit, so let's say they split. You make up a half game, so you are 7-8 out. Not terrible since I'm not concerned with winning the East just yet. Let's get to the all-star break first. Let KC and Cleveland do whatever; we pass them when we pass them. Let's hope Tampa and NY also split 4. We'll make up a half game on each over the weekend. 3/4 from Tampa will help us more, but not betting on it. Hopefully we can pick up a game at least on Texas who is at St. Louis.

I really need to get back to working on my ranking and projection systems. It would make this much easier.

By Monday, wildcard standings could look like this.

                      NY
                      Baltimore - 0.5 GB
                      Texas - 1 GB
                      KC - 4 GB
                      Tampa - 4.5 GB
                      Cleveland - 4.5 GB
                      Toronto - 4.5 GB

We'll pass KC and Cleveland if they do worse than 2-1 in their series. 1.5 more games made up in 5 days? I'll take it.

Hey, if someone offered me the time to work on my systems and the money to write, hell yea I'd do it! I used to real big into baseball stats and stuff in high school, but college got in the way.

Yeah Doc, you're quite good with this stuff. Maybe you should try posting some of this kind of stuff for Battersbox.ca as they're really big with analysis. Who knows what could happen.

I will say this, if the Jays are playing meaningful games in September than this season isn't a total loss and they have something to build for in 2014. I'm really hoping this weighted ball program for the pitchers starts to take a hold and the arms could be a lot healthier from 2014 onwards as well.

Last time Jays swept multiple series back to back(where one of those series was a 4 game series)

1998 when they swept Twins in 3, followed by Royals in 2, then Red Sox in 4.

7-4 record in order to finish above .500(1 game error(6-5) I guess since 40-41 still isn't that bad.

And ya, even reaching 40-41 wins at midway point in season, we can't throw it away by losing 3/4 to Tigers. On the plus side,we face Tigers at home(Tigers currently 16-19 on the road) AND we'll have Reyes back by then to help out with offense against strong pitching team.
